Indian Fashion designers are famed faces in the International Fashion Industry and it is because of them only India is in the list of top fashion countries. As all of us know that the Indian fabric and textile is equally renowned and in great demand in international markets places.
Let us see those faces who took the Indian Fashion and Indian Fashion Industry at the pinnacle. All of them are the well known faces of the Fashion Industry and are the best Fashion Designers of India.
Manish Malhotra: He stepped into Bollywood by designing clothes for Juhi Chawla in Swarg when he was just 25. Today, his name is synonymous with trend in Hindi films. He revolutionized the bollywood movies by envisioning a ‘look’ of the character. He has designed clothes for most of the leading actresses in the Indian film industry. It includes Sridevi, Urmila Matondkar, Karishma Kapoor, Kajol, Raveena Tandon, Manisha Koirala, Madhuri Dixit, Twinkle Khanna, Shilpa Shetty, Kareena Kapoor, Aishwarya Rai, Rani Mukherjee and Preity Zinta.
With his successful tenure he decided to open up a high-profile couture store Reverie – Manish Malhotra. His popularity soared up when he was solely asked to design attires for Michael Jackson for his appearance at the time of Bollywood Awards held in New York. The famous MJ got so impressed that he requested Manish to design outfits for his show in Munich and to design attires for his children too.
Wendell Rodricks: He started his journey as a catering graduate but later he realized that fashion designing was more suitable to his palate. His famous chic style is a craze among Indian Fashion lovers. He is well known for his passion for white. He wrote special features for Apparel, regular columns for Goa Today, Femina and freelance fashion journalism in main news media of India.
In 1994, the Ministry of Culture exhibited the Wendell Rodricks Shiva Temples Collection at the Indian Festival in Peking, Canton & Shanghai. The designer is a great art supporter and encourages Goan artists via his special promotions at the Wendell Rodricks Couture Salon.
Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla: The duo of Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla are other great names in the fashion circuit. They were among the first people to display their creations at Harrods. Though their events are not so frequent but still the most awaited one. They lack in professional training but their ethnic fashion trends are incomparable. They claim that they do not make garments, they make heirlooms.
Tarun Tahiliani: He is one of the best and most celebrated fashion designers. He owns a degree from The Fashion Institute of Technology, New York. When he returned back to India, he realized that there was a huge scope in Indian Fashion Industry. He brought a boom in fashion Industry in 1987, when he started first fashion boutique in India, ‘Ensemble’. He also established the Tarun Tahiliani Design Studio in New Delhi. His own brand is known as Ahilian.
JJ Valaya: He was born and raised in the ancient city of Jodhpur in Rajasthan. He has made his position as one of the most original and inspired designers of Indian Fashion Industry. The ultimate fusion of traditional crafts and contemporary haute couture is the signature of the House of Valaya. Looking at the rapid globalization, he has rejuvenated and redefined old Indian crafts as a beneficial niche within the cosmopolitan market.
In 1994, he became the first Indian couture tag to have a solo show in India and opened JJ Valaya Life. This is India’s largest single designer store till date. His contemporary and groundbreaking styles guarantee that the majestic era of royal India will continue to sovereign the present.
Rina Dhaka: She is India’s one of the most creative fashion designers who forayed into the fashion world in late 1980s. She won Yuv Rattan Award and also set up a ‘Salwar Kameez’ boutique for one of her friends. ‘Mutiny’ and ‘Ensemble’ were just rising up around that time and she made a line of designs for them.
She is best recognized for her collections like sheer trousers, crochet, stretch jersey, woolens and spider web motifs. Her forte remains western wear and emphasizes silhouettes. She is ready to experiment and so she had mixed fur and boots with her Indian outfits in one of her collections. Her 2001 and 2002 Singapore shows were super success. International fashion magazines ‘Vogue’ and ‘Elle’ boasted her work. All her designs are available in popular stores like Carma -Delhi, Design Studio-Mumbai, Kimaya-Mumbai, Selfridges-London, Coin-Italy and Lord and Taylor-New York.
Manish Arora: Manish Arora came up with his tag “Manish Arora” in 1997 and started retailing in India. And then after in 2000, he represented India at the Hong Kong Fashion Week and took part at the very first India Fashion Week held in New Delhi. In the coming year he set up his second Label “Fish Fry”.
MAC has listed him for his vision and sense of style to get together on a new, Raj-inspired beauty range. He is known for his colorful fashion shows and has created wide range of lipsticks, blush and a fab eye palette from the bright shades of Yellow to Pink and Acid Green for MAC.
Rohit Bal: He was entitled as the ‘India’s Master of fabric and fantasy‘ by the Time magazine in 1996. From small town where the artisans weave dreams with their magic fingers, to mills, workshops and outlets where retailers shove for survival, to the gilded grandeur of glitzy boutiques and malls in the big cities of high fashion, he leads one to the doors of discovery and holds the position.
Some of his clients include celebs like Uma Thurman, Cindy Crawford, Pamela Anderson, Naomi Campbell and Anna Kournikova. Most of his shows are sponsored by The Swatch Group, and he is the brand ambassador for their Omega Watches, since 2001.
Ritu Beri: She is the first Indian designer to present her collection in Paris. She is one of former fashion designers whose collection went quite big internationally. Today her designs have become a high spot in Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, USA, London and Paris. And of course there is no comparison with her style and elegance. Her ready-to-wear line is an awesome couture collection that had the French media gushing about. She started her glorious career when she made her first line of clothing in 1990, called Lavanya. It was a huge success in India as well as on the international market.
Ritu Kumar: She is one of earlier and most reputed fashion divas and has created a unique style of her own. Her designs have the traditions of Indian craftsmanship with a background of art history and musicology. She holds the position of a revivalist and has successfully bridged the gap between traditionalism and modernity. Her sub brand, ‘LABEL’ is very much affordable and designed to aim today’s women.
She has been designing the closets of the three winning Miss India’s, for their participation in the most reputed International Beauty Pageants (Miss Universe , Miss World and Miss Asia Pacific respectively).
